An allergic reaction happens when the body comes into contact with foreign particles (allergens) it does not recognise 1,4-5. This causes the body’s immune system to be triggered, which produces antibodies to attack these particles. As a result, histamine is released 1,4-5. It is histamine that causes the symptoms of allergies 1,4-5.
A substance that causes an allergic reaction is called an “allergen”1,4.
Common allergens include1,4:
- Pollen
- House dust mites
- Pet dander
