Predisposing factors

Factors predisposing to constipation in adults are 4:

Social factors 4:

  • A low fibre diet, or increased dietary fat
  • Difficulty in toilet access or changes in routine/lifestyle
  • Lack of exercise or reduced mobility
  • Limited auditory or visual privacy when using the toilet
  • History of sexual abuse

Psychological factors 4:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Eating disorders

Physical factors 4:

  • Mild fever, dehydration, immobility
  • Position for defecation: Sitting on a seat rather than squatting
