Understanding constipation

Constipation is a common condition that affects people of all ages 3-4.

Constipation is defecation that is unsatisfactory because of infrequent stools, difficult stool passage, or seemingly incomplete defecation 3-4.

Stools are often dry and hard and may either be abnormally large or abnormally small. In simple words constipation means that a patient is not passing stools regularly or is unable to completely empty his or her bowels 3-4.

Constipation is a common problem at all ages. It is twice as common in women as in men and more common in the elderly. Constipation is also particularly common during pregnancy 3-4.
